杭外的包老师的一堂课有点意思,他没有读后的话题讨论,没有主题的深化,而是把重点放在文本阅读上,分五层阅读: 1、reading for comprehension (学生自学) 2、reading for what the writer tells 3、reading for what the writer does 4、reading for the writer‘s purpose 5、reading for the writing style。这跟月初在杭外进行的同课异构活动中杭外王凝迟老师的设计都是出自同样的考虑,回归阅读的本源,也是我一直所主张的观点,阅读的的三层次:

1、reading for information

2、reading for thinking

3、reading for creativity

包晓明老师的教案实录如下:

Self-introduction

Good afternoon, everyone. I am very glad to be here today! People keep telling me that the best students in Hangzhou are here in Xujun High School. The moment I entered your school, I felt a great teaching and learning environment.

Listen to the teacher and get familiar with the teacher

Ss starts getting into an English learning environment

Start topic

My name is Bao. Can you guess how old I am?  Do I look young or old?

Guess the teacher’s actual age according to his look.

Ss say the teacher is young or old.

Though I look younger than my actual age, I have found recently that there are more and more wrinkles on my forehead. I don’t want people to think that I am pretty old. I want to look as young as you are.

Do you have any suggestions? How much do you know about plastic surgery?

Write the new vocabulary on the blackboard

You can go to see a plastic surgeon.

You can have a cosmetic/plastic surgery.

You can have a face-lift.

Ss provide T with factual knowledge in the article about plastic surgery.

I am afraid of surgical operations. What if the surgery is unsuccessful?

You can inject some Botox so your wrinkles will disappear.

Ss mention the non-surgical method of plastic surgery.

But that won’t last long.  In four month, the wrinkles will come back again. Maybe, I will look even older.

You can go back and get another injection

Ss give more information about Botox injection.

Reading 1

Comprehen-sion

Well, it seems that you have known so much about plastic surgery.

I have collected questions designed by everyone and there are here for you to choose from.

Whose question do you want to answer first?

Pick up 5 questions from PPT.

The one who answers can choose the next question.

Ss answer the picked question according to the facts in the text.

Reading 2

General idea

Please read the article again and write down the main idea of every paragraph. Discuss with your group members.

Read the text again and write down the main idea of the paragraphs in groups.

Ss find the main idea of each paragraph.

1) a terrible plastic surgery case in Maxico

2) this woman and other 430 others had surgery given by an ex-dancer and got permanent scars.

3) there are two kinds of plastic surgery

4) the most popular surgical and non-surgical

5) lots of men have had cosmetic surgery

Reading 3

The writer’s purpose

From the main ideas of every paragraph we can know what the writer says.

Well, what do you think the writer does?

In the first paragraph, the writer is telling a true story.

Every two lines of students read two paragraphs (2-3,3-4,4-5), and find out what the writer does?

Why did the writer tell us a story first at the very beginning of the article?

Read a single paragraph and find out what the writer does.

He wants to make the reader interested in the topic and continue reading.

1) introducing a real story about plastic surgery

2) giving more details about what really happened to those women

3) giving scientific definition’s

4) providing more information

5) explaining the popularity

Question the writer

Did the writer do a good job of introducing his topic? How can you tell that? Which sentence or word makes you think he did a good job?

(SHOCKED. When will doctors be shocked? Is it easy to shock doctors?)

Yes.  Doctors were shocked. Maria was just the first of many patients.

Ss explain the writer’s purpose of telling a shocking story to begin his topic.

Ss mention: Doctors have seen lots of patients but this time they are shock. It must be very terrible. She was the first one; there were many more.

Reading 4

Analyse the writing style

Please take a look at the article again. Listen, if the writer is writing for a gossip magazine. How many paragraphs does he need?

If the writer is writing for a scientific magazine, how many paragraphs does he need?

(Return to Reading 3: a good job)

Choose the paragraphs according to the writing style.

1)     Newspaper – What happened, who where how…

2)     Science magazine -- What is what, numbers, facts, …

Paragraph 1-2 news story

Paragraph 3-5 scientific introduction The writing styles are different. One is narration (story telling) the other one is introductory (introduce a scientific term)

So obviously, there are two parts in this article.

Check the chart of the paragraphs and decide.

Ss tell there are to parts.

Paragraph 1-2, Paragraph 3-5.

Discuss the writer’s writing

How does the writer do to put them together?

Read and find out the transitional sentence

“Fortunately, not all plastic surgery is as unsuccessful as that of the victims in Guadalajara, and most doctors who perform plastic surgery are far more skilled than Ms. Gaona.”

We can’t delete this sentence. Why?

He wrote this for the students to read.

Think about the writer’s purpose.

This is in a TEXTBOOK. The readers are students.

Readers are what the writer thinks the most important.  Because different readers will think differently after they read the article. They will be interested in different thins.

So when a doctor read it, which part do you think he will be interested in?

Ss think as a doctor who is reading the article.

As some one who is going to have plastic surgery…

Doctors are interested in the story, they have already know everything about plastic surgery.

A person who wants to have plastic surgery are more interested in the knowledge about plastic surgery.

End

Conclusion on critical reading

How many times have we read the article?

Which times are easier and which times are harder?

It is easy to find out what the writer is saying, while it is hard to find out what the writer is doing.

Review how they read.

The 1st and 2nd are easier. We read for information.

The 3rd and 4th times are harder. We analyze the writing and question the writer.

Assignment

Find report(s) of the original story on the Internet and read it. What the writer is doing by writing it?
