There is homework to be done, an essay to be written, a school book to be read, but right now you have more important things to do, right? You have to update your Weibo blog, get to level ten on the computer game you’re playing, and isn’t this the perfect time to re-arrange your sock drawer?

Does this sound like you?If it does, then you are a procrastinator:someone who delays doing important things by wasting time doing unimportant things.Procrastination is a Latin word that means“to put off until tomorrow.”The word is all over the Internet now because of a popular video. Some American kids wrote a song about all their procrastinations and Chinese kids said,“Hey,I do those same things!”It’s something everyone has in common and it’s something everyone worries about.
So why do we procrastinate?Well, for one thing,we underestimate the time it will take to complete a task. For another,we may think the task is too difficult and so we are reluctant to get started.Instead,we waste time doing things we like to do,such as playing computer games, and hope that tomorrow we will be more motivated and get everything done in a short amount of time. This is just wishful thinking.
To overcome procrastination, you should make a plan and stick to that plan.Make a list of things that need to be done and set realistic goals to get them done.Estimate the time you think it will take to complete a task, then increase that amount by100percent.A big task will always take longer than you think it will. And,finally, promise yourself a reward for completing the task.Pizza works for me!
It’s a new year and a great time to break some of your procrastination habits.A good start would be to cut back on the use of electronic media such as computer games, mobile phones and tablets. They are a lot of fun,but they can be insidious(暗中为害的)diversions—and a real“thief”of your time!
