有趣或是实用,一些发明被《时代》周刊选为年度最佳。
The year 2013 has seen a wide array of inventions, some of them solving problems that we never thought could be solvedand others simply making life more fun.Which of these inventions stand out? Check out some of the things that made itinto Time magazine’s list of the 25 best inventions of 2013.
      Gravity’s Lightbox
For his smash hit space saga Gravity, director Alfonso Cuarón had to throw out the normal sci-fi playbook and be creative.Working with cinematographer(摄影师) Emmanuel Lubezki and others, he created a “lightbox,” a 6-by-3-mstructure covered with 196 panels of 4,096 LED bulbs, each to simulate (模拟) the extreme light in outer space. The box had the added bonus of being able to project (投射) images that would be added later in CGI(计算机合成图像), so that the actors had a visual reference.
       The3Doodler
Enjoy doodling? The 3 Doodler promises to make it more fun.The pen doodles in three dimensions instead of two.Essentially it works like a 3D printer, melting and cooling colored plastic to create freestanding structures in any shape imaginable. Invented by Maxwell Bogue,Peter Dilworth and Daniel Cowen at the Boston-based toy company WobbleWorks,the3Doodler raised over$2million on Kickstarter, the world’s largest funding platformfor creative projects.
       The Cronut
You may never have thought of eating a donut and a croissant(牛角或羊角面包)at the same time, but someone did.In May,NewYork City chef Dominique Ansel started selling a fusion food(融合美食)called the cronut—made of croissant-style pastry(酥皮点心)that’s fried like a donut, filled with creamand topped with glaze(糖浆).The creation turns out to be a great hit, with foodies willing to wait hours for a taste.Scalpers (黄牛)were even hawking(兜售)the$5treats for up to$40!
       Rewalk
For paraplegics(双腿瘫痪者),the invention means freedom. This innovative device, developed by a quadriplegic(四肢瘫痪的)Israeli scientist, relies on sensors that anticipate shifts in the user’s balance and translates them into movements like walking and standing.Already available in Europe, the suit had its prime-time debut on an episode of Glee and is being reviewed by the FDA(美国食品药品监督管理局)for use in the U.S.
