你知道吗,关注儿童权益,除了儿童节,还有“国际不打小孩日”。
To spank or not to spank? That is thequestion which sparked much debatearound the world on April 30th—International SpankOut Day.The day is meant to give widespread attention to an important topic, the corporal punishment(体罚)of children.
In many countries around the world, corporal punishment,or spanking,is considered a normal part of child rearing. If a child acts out and dis-obeys,a parent may choose to hit the child.Par-ents who support spanking explain that its pur-pose is to discourage bad or unsafe behaviour,es-pecially if the child is too young to understand words. To Spank or Not To Spank?(中考阅读) - 称子英语 - 孙广趁教育教学工作室

On the other hand, spanking is considered in-appropriate and even illegal in some countries, such as in Sweden,Germany and Spain. In addi-tion,in other countries like Canada and the U.S.,while spanking is not illegal, many organizations promote an end to corporal punishment. Those organizations quote studies which claim that physical punishment is linked with an increase in delinquency, aggression, and mental health is-sues like depression. In a recent Canadian study, researchers claim that spanking can be linked to decreased brain function and long-termdevelop-mental difficulties.
In addition to the medical debate, there is also an ethical debate. Some people claimthat spank-ing a child is just plain“wrong.”If it’s not okay to hit another adult, why should it be okay to hit a child?Others think that it’s a“lazy way out”for parents.Spanking is“easy”and it can become a slippery slope towards child abuse.
Looking at the attitudes in Sweden is valu-able,since it’s been unlawful to spank a child there since1957.One woman from Sweden,in an interview with Today’s Parent magazine,ex-plained that Swedish parents don’t spank, not because they think they’ll get into trouble, but they think physical punishment“is bad...and would be a sign of failure as a parent.”
This is most certainly a complex issue. Many parents who spank their child do so out of love and concern, not because of anger or any intent to abuse their child. If a country is going to take away parents’freedom to physically punish a child, they must also teach parents how to disci-pline differently.
