In a recent article for the British newspaper TheGuardian(《卫报》),American novelist JonathanFranzen tells readers that he appreciated real, printed newspapers more“as the Internet rose to power, disseminating information that could be trusted as little as it cost to read it.”The Importance of “Digital Literacy”(九年级阅读) - 称子英语 - 孙广趁教育教学工作室

That’s a turn of phrase that we could apply to the discussion of Internet rumors(谣言)and their impact:this kind of information can be trusted as little as it costs to read it.That is,we can’t trust it at all.Franzen may be overstating the case to make a point. There are, after all, plenty of ways that the Internet has provided access to information that is trustworthy and accurate, not to mention helpful. The problem is that the Internet has also flooded our lives with less accurate and less trustworthy material.Unfortunately, not everyone is good at sorting the valid from the invalid-or the facts from the rumors.
“Digital literacy”is the name for this21st centu-ry skill, and it is becoming as fundamentally im-portant as literacy itself. So how do we tell the real from the false? The useful from the useless? How do we become digitally literate?
Like anything,it takes practice at asking ques-tions and, above all, paying attention to details.Who is the author?Do you know a real name or just a username(用户名)?Why should you trust this person?Does he or she provide some credentials (证明)?One really important question readers should always ask is:what kind of domain(域名)is hosting the information?Does it appear on a “.com”site?On a“.org”?How about“.edu”?There are big differences in the domains, and it is important to understand these.
It was easier to tell a trustworthy source in the days before the Internet. Then,we all knew which newspapers had the highest standards and which ones were more for sensation and entertainment than for real news and commentary.
Now,with millions of bloggers typing away across the planet, telling the good from the bad is a skill as important as reading. On the other hand, you could turn off your computer and cell phone and just read real newspapers like this one!
