“OK,Ma,I’ll visit. Please don’t sue!”Just in time for Double Ninth Festival,a new lawstates that children must visit their elderly parents or risk being sued. But the law isn’t meant to fill the courts with neglected parents and their negligent(疏忽的)offspring.According to Xiao Jinming(肖金明),one of the drafters of this law,it’s primarily aimed at raising awareness of a growing social problem.Dont Forget the Old Folks - 称子英语 - 孙广趁教育教学工作室

There has been a breakdown in China’s traditional family arrangement.More children are living apart from their parents, some in distant cities and even abroad. As a result, some parents only see their children at Spring Festival,if that.Wang Yi,an elderly cleaning lady from Shanghai, says that’s not enough. She says,“I think twice a year would be good.We Chinese people raise children to take care of us when we are old.”
Today, there are over200million people in China over the age of60and one third of those live in poverty.Without the emotional and sometimes financial support of their children, their lives would be very poor indeed.Luckily, most children show their love for their parents and live up to their responsibilities.
In Western countries, parents living alone are called“empty nesters.”Their children have flown from the family nest and lead independent lives. These“empty nesters”are quite happy with the arrangement and, because of better social services, they don’t need to be“taken care of”by their children. Most Western families, however,do remain close. My sister-in-law’s mother just passed away at the age of93.In her last years, because of poor health, she lived in an assisted care facility.Even though it was100km away,my sister-in-law visited her mother every week and phoned her every day. But,according to her,she was only doing what any good daughter would do.
Children should honor and respect their par-ents,but no law can really force them to do it.It has to come fromthe heart.Even though they may be busy, even though they may be far away, children should always make time to show their love for their parents. They shouldn’t have to wait for a lawsuit to arrive in the mail.
