Paper Plane to Be Dropped from Space(中考阅读)

很多人小时候都玩过纸飞机,但是有没有人想过纸飞机究竟能飞多远呢?日本目前在进行一项研究,希望让纸飞机能够从外太空平安飞回地球。

For most people, it is enough to see their paper planes fly for a few feet. The Japanese, however, want to make one fly for 240 miles from space in November.

They have made plans to drop a paper plane from the International Space Station down to the Earth and track its course. The idea is to pioneer a lightweight generation of gliders1 that could study theatmosphere2.

The 8-inch-long paper plane has been treated with a chemical so that it can survive the temperature of 200℃as it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere. A 3-inch-long pa-per plane has been tested at the University of Tokyo at the temperature of up to 300℃.

One of the designers, Professor Shinji Suzuki, said, "We do not know where it will land, but if the paper plane successfully flies from space, the new design ideas for space reentry can be explored."

The paper plane will probably start its trip during a space walk. It will continue at the same speed as the space station, but its orbit3 will gradually change.

If it survives the drop, it is most likely to end up in the sea. And the engineers at Tokyo University think maybe someone will find the paper plane before them, so they have written a message in several languages, saying, "This plane flew from the International Space Station. Please return the plane to Japan Origami Plane Association4."

This crazy paper plane plan was brought up by the leader of the Japan Origami Plane Association, Takuo Toda. In 1999, Takuo Toda asked Professor Suzuki if he could help design a three-meter airplane for a television program. The plane flew successfully from the top of a mountain. Then Mr. Toda asked Professor Suzuki if he would help send a paper plane from space.
