You would think that with a talent pool of 1.3 billion people to choose from that China’s national soccer team would rank higher than 88th in the world, but the country’s sports development program, which has been so successful in turning out individual champion athletes such as Liu Xiang, has been less successful when it comes to team sports.
To try to remedy this situation, the Ministry of Education has been brought in to promote youth soccer in the schools. Soccer will become part of the mandatory physical education programs in 20,000 primary and secondary schools by 2017 and students’ soccer level will be counted in their overall assessment when they apply to higher levels of education. China’s Vice-Premier Liu Yandong(刘延东) says, “The development of soccer in schools forms the cornerstone in realizing China’s soccer dream to join the world’s elite at major sporting events.”
This is good news for China’s soccer future, but it’s even better news for China’s students. Competitive team sports are not encouraged in Chinese schools. In America, however, they are a source of pride. Being part of a teamteaches students character: how to work with others, how to strive for a common goal and howto handle both defeat and victory. It also makes the students healthy and improves their grades.
This last point may be the unintended benefit of the newsoccer program. In some schools, PE has been squeezed out of the curriculum as teachers think it takes time away from studying. But research after research has shown that physical activity increases academic performance. One recent study by the Institute of Medicine in America says that “a growing body of evidence” suggests that children who are active can focus their attention better, have better memories and performbetter on tests. And a study in Britain says exercise brings more oxygen to the brain and increases neurotransmitters which are the pathways in the brain that carry information. All of which leads to better grades.
Putting soccer in the schools is a good idea and it may someday lead to China not only having the best teamin the world, but also the smartest.
