As parents wave good bye totheir little ones from theother side of the kinder-garten gates each morning, there are  probably many concerns running through their mind. Will my child be happy and content while away from me?Will they get along with the other kids? Will someone comfort themif they scrape(擦破)their knee or bump their forehead? The one question they’re probably not ask-ing themselves is—will my child be drugged today?Shockingly, that’s the lone question some parents wish they had been asking.
The news first broke in Xi’an when a parent accused their child’s kindergarten staff of administering prescription anti-viral drugs(抗病毒的处方药).Parents reported that their children complained of stom-achaches and night sweats. An inves-tigation later revealed that those children had abnormal urine and blood tests and possible liver and kidney damage. The local Xi’an authorities con-firmed the children at the kinder-garten had been given moroxydine ABOB(病毒灵),a prescription drug used to treat the flu.One parent said that their child was asked to keep the pill a secret for nearly three years.
This story is shocking enough, but it doesn’t end there.Another Xi’an kindergarten was also shut down due to accusations of a similar practice. In total,1,455students in Xi’an have been affected. As word spread, more suspected kindergarten drug use came to light in Jilin and Hubei provinces. The list of negative side effects has also grown, adding irregular heartbeats, itching(瘙痒),vomiting(呕吐)and dizziness(头晕)to the list.
There is no doubt that the kindergartens showed extremely bad judgment, but according to Dr.Nel-son Lee,professor of infectious dis-eases(传染病)at the Chinese Uni-versity of Hong Kong(香港中文大学),their decision may be even more alarming.Dr.Lee explained that no reports or clinical trials have been done on this1950s drug, meaning doctors know very little about how harmful moroxydine could be.
As the shockwave of this story settles, one hopes that the guilty parties will be brought to justice.Persons entrusted with the care of children have one of the greatest re-sponsibilities in society. It shouldn’t be taken lightly, and breaching that trust should be met with severe punishment. However, the big re-maining question is how did the staff get their hands on a drug that should only be available through prescrip-tion anyways?Perhaps this story is a symptomof a bigger problemin Chi-na—the lack of accountability(问责)for prescription drug distribution.
