别急着说自己长大了,先把生活技能“拉出来遛遛”!
There are many stories of Chinese parents indulging their grown-up or almost grown-up children, but a story last month takes the cake. Liu Liangyi, deputy director of the State Post Bureau(国家邮政局), said many college students are mailing their laundry home to be cleaned.Youve Got Mail—and It Smells Bad!(中考阅读) - 称子英语 - 孙广趁教育教学工作室
According to Liu, students are taking advantage of China Post’s efficient service and low-cost parcel delivery rates to fob off(硬塞) one of life’s most dreary(沉闷的) chores onto their parents. Apparently, the put-upon(受剥削的) parents meekly(温顺地) do the laundry and—washed, dried, ironed and folded—return the laundry, again by post.
It’s not certain how widespread this practice is, but one newspaper quoted a student as saying he sends his laundry to his parents by post every two months! One has to cringe at the thought of his poor parents opening a parcel containing two-month’s worth of dirty socks and underwear. I’m even surprised that China Post would accept the parcel given their strict rules about toxic material being sent through the mail.
Despite college students’ well-deserved reputation for laziness and poor hygiene, the laundry story set people talking again about the lack of life skills possessed by younger generations. Young people have been so coddled(悉心照顾) by their parents that they are unable to cook, clean, sew a button on a shirt, or even open a bank account. And this dependence has carried on so that “grown-ups” in their late twenties and thirties still go home to mom’s for dinner and get dad to handle their finances.
The whole point of “growing up” is to cut the family apron strings and become an independent and self-sufficient person. And it’s never too early to start that process. You can begin by hanging around the kitchen and learning how to cook a few simple meals. You can ask your parents how bills are paid and how the family budgets its money. And, since most families now have washing machines, you can even help with the laundry. That alone may save your parents from pungent (气味刺鼻的) parcels being sent home from college.
