No one can say that the Shanghai education system is backward or rigid and not open to new ideas. There are probably few cities in the world willing to innovate like Shanghai and offer students top quality education and choices for their future.
This month, in response to the increasing numbers of students seeking to go abroad for their high school studies, the Shanghai Education Commission gave the go-ahead for 21 local high schools to offer an international curriculum. Beginning next term, 11 public and 10 private high schools will offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, Advanced Placement, or Britain’s A-Levels. These courses will be taught in English and enable graduates to apply directly to foreign universities.
Different frominternational schools in Shanghai, however, students in the new program will still have to study Chinese language, politics, history and geography. It means they will have to work very hard but it also leaves them with the option of taking the gaokao if they choose. The new policy has been welcomed by many parents who were thinking of sending their children abroad.Gu Jidong, the father of a14-year-old girl, was quoted in Shanghai Daily saying, “I believe the education my daughter will receive will be just as good as she would get overseas.” Gu had worried about being separated from his daughter and whether she could cope with the stress of being on her own. Other parents were happy because they feel their children don’t fit the current Chinese system and studying an international curriculum locally will relieve some of the pressure while still giving their children a chance to go to college.
The costs of the newprogram may also be a relief to parents. Shanghai Shixi High School will charge 1500 yuan per term. One term at an American high school could cost as much as 125,000 yuan. Private schools in Shanghai will charge more, about 55,000 yuan, but that’s still a great savings for parents not looking to impoverish themselves with tuition fees. Overall, the new policy shows that Shanghai is trying hard to make sure all students get the education they need and the education they deserve.
