With spring now in full swing and MarchMadness coming to an end, it is a perfect time to talk about sports, and how Americans enjoy them. Like people all over the world, Americans enjoy physical challenges ,and there are many ways to pursue them.
To get a better idea of how Americans participate in sports, let’s use an example of a very athletic high school student. Our student, named Terry, is very good at sports, and enjoys almost all of them. In high school Terry joins one of the many teams available at the school.
One of the differences in sports between China and the United States is the high school sports team, which is led by a coach and regularly meets to practice. A team becomes a social group, and for some students, it gives them a sense of identity. Terry could have chosen basketball, football, baseball, swimming, or soccer, but he really liked gymnastics.
The gymnastics team competed with other schools, and Terry did very well. First the team won local competitions in the city, and did so well that they could compete at the state level. After competing with the best teams in the state, Terry’s coach thinks Terry has a chance to compete at a higher level, and recommends that Terry do well in school so that he can join a college team.
If Terry wanted to, there would be chances for him to go on to a career as a gymnast, but he really wanted to study something different in college. In college Terry enjoys hiking and mountain sports like skiing, so when there is time he goes with friends into one of the national parks.
There are millions of Americans like Terry, who enjoy several sports, including watching them in person or on television. Basketball, American football (not to be confused with soccer), and baseball are the best known “spectator sports,” and have professional and college teams in most major cities.
In areas with a coast, Americans can enjoy a number of water sports such as surfing and boating, and with hills and mountains, people can ski, hike, mountain bike, and go rock climbing. There are too many sports to mention and any sport you may have heard about exists in the United States.
There is a lot to learn about sports, and if you have an interest, I encourage you to look online for more information or contact me. Until the next question, Neil
