Chinese sci-fi best-seller The Three-Body Problem won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel last month. As the Hugo Award is one of the highest honors across the world for science fiction works and this was the first time for an Asian work to win the award, the news soon sent ripples(涟漪,引申为“传播”) of excitement across China’s Internet and sci-fi community.
Liu Cixin, the author of The Three-Body Problem, said he was “very happy about the honor.” He believed that the honor “would help boost the export of Chinese sci-fi works to the West and help Western readers better understand Chinese sci-fi.”
Published between 2006 and 2010, The Three-Body Problem has been praised as the best Chinese sci-fi series ever. Over one million copies have been sold in the original Chinese. It is also one of the few Chinese science fiction novels that have been translated into English and become a hit on overseas markets.
The trilogy(三部曲) presents the centuries of conflicts between earthlings(地球人) and the Triso-laran(三体人)civilization that exists in a three-sun system. It revolves around(围绕) one of the oldest questions in science fiction: What would it mean for the human race to come into contact with extraterres-trial intelligence(外星智慧生命)? From there, the novel goes far beyond the readers’ imagination. Readers may find themselves easily blown away(留下深刻印象) by the novel’s true originality. Liu links the success and popularity of his masterpiece to people’s fears and hopes for the fate(命运) of humankind in the middle of fast-paced change. “The future in people’s eyes is full of attraction, temptations and hope,” he said. “But at the same time, it is full of threats and challenges. That makes very fertile (肥沃的) soil for sci-fi works.” In China, science fiction remains a less popular literary genre(体裁). But in recent years, The Three-Body Problem, along with a number of other impressive works, has largely aroused people’s enthusiasm for science fiction. The Hugo prize just cheered up Chinese sci-fi writers and fans further.
